The use of CBD for treating menstrual pain and pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) has been rising in popularity these past few years. Pre-menstrual syndrome varies in the individual but symptoms often include but are not limited to abdominal pain, uterine cramping, mood changes, headaches, and lower back pain. CBD has anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties which can contribute to treating specific menstrual issues such as abdominal cramps and lower back pain.
PMS symptoms are not limited to physical only, emotional and mental disturbances can also arise during the menstrual cycle. Psychological symptoms can include anxiety, depression, mood swings and sleep issues. CBD has been studied and suggested to relieve and treat symptoms of inflammation, chronic pain, anxiety, depression and insomnia.
Most often, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to treat the physical symptoms of PMS however they do not treat the psychological effects. NSAIDs also have serious side effects that can cause myocardial infarction and stroke. Others who suffer from GERD or gut issues may react poorly with gastrointestinal problems like bleeding, ulceration and perforation.
Although more CBD specific studies and the management of PMS are necessary before we can conclude the efficacy, there are enough studies on CBD and pain management to suggest that CBD may be a suitable alternative to help with acute and chronic pain relief.
